How Portfolio Modeler handles data

Portfolio Modeler is designed to be usable without an account, login, or brokerage connection. The simulator asks for modeling inputs only, such as ticker symbols, allocation weights, tax assumptions, and contribution or withdrawal settings.

Information entered into the simulator

Visitors may enter ticker symbols, portfolio values, tax rates, contribution or withdrawal amounts, and other planning assumptions. These inputs are used to generate simulation results. Portfolio Modeler does not ask for brokerage usernames, passwords, Social Security numbers, account numbers, or bank information.

If a visitor saves a preset, the preset may be stored in that visitor's browser using local storage. This makes it possible to reopen the same assumptions on the same device later. Browser-stored presets are not a substitute for professional recordkeeping.

Market data requests

When historical data is refreshed, ticker symbols are sent to the site's market-data endpoint so the simulator can request public market data. The returned assumptions are used to estimate return, volatility, dividends, dividend growth, and covariance for the selected securities.

Advertising and cookies

Portfolio Modeler uses Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies or similar technologies to serve, personalize, and measure advertisements. Ad personalization and consent options may vary by region and by the visitor's Google settings.

For more information about how Google uses advertising data, review Google's advertising and privacy resources at policies.google.com/technologies/ads.

Educational disclaimer

Portfolio Modeler provides educational estimates. It is not a registered investment adviser, broker, tax preparer, or law firm. The simulator output should not be treated as investment, tax, legal, accounting, or retirement advice.
